AROUND LAS VEGAS
MISTER B'S-OPEN ON PARADISE!
Who is Mister B's? It's the newest casual upscale Italian eatery in town. Located in the old Z'Tejas building on Paradise, right down the street from the Convention Center, Mister B's is going to be bringing in the crowds. Mister B's is named after Bernie Cheater, a Canadian who owned 25 Chi Chi Restaurants. He went on to open 4 Peg Sports in Winnipeg. But Bernie decided he loved Las Vegas, so he is sharing his time between the two cities.
I dined there Friday night and met the manager Brett Wachman. He couldn't have been a better host. We started with the Calamari Fritti, which had to be some of the best I have ever tasted. Very lightly floured, it was perfect. The appetizer menu has Sauteed Prawns, Stuffed Portobello Mushroom with crab meat, Crab Cakes and Baked Eggplant making it hard to make a decision. The Carpaccio di Manzo, thin sliced raw beef, with wild arugula, capers and shaved parmigiano cheese is mouth- watering. Among the pastas are Seafood Linguine, Penne alla Vodka, Sea Shells Contadina, stuffed with garlic, tomatoes, broccoli and chicken, Gnocchi al Pesto, and Spaghetti Carbonara. I also tried the Veal Saltimbocca, topped with Prosciutto di Parma, sage and Fontina Cheese, which was perfect. There are 11 Pasta dishes, 10 Meat and Poultry dish, and 7 pizzas to choose from. With a pizza oven that goes to 850 degrees, where else can you get a freshly made pizza in 6 minutes. The dessert menu was heaven, with a manicotta flan, cheesecake, and the specialty of the house, 15 different gelatos to pick from.
Seating 120 in the main dining room, 45 in the bar, 60 in the outdoor patio and 100 in the back private dining area, this restaurant has plenty of room for even the biggest parties. Totally redesigned, overhead panels hold flashing tubes of LED lights. With four large screen t.v.'s everyone seat has a view. There is live entertainment nightly. Open 7 days a week, from 11 to 2 a.m., and serving brunch on Sundays, you mustn't miss stopping by soon. 3824 Paradise Rd. Las Vegas, NV 89169. 702-836-9449 for reservations.
HUSSONG'S- and now adding next door SLICE OF VEGAS!
The world famous HUSSONG'S CANTINA, which has it's flagship in Ensenada Mexico and it's Las Vegas location in Mandalay Place for two years in January is now opening SLICE OF VEGAS, right next door in April. SLICE will be a great edition, offering pizzas, salads, calzones, baked zitti's and all the trimmings. Hussong's Executive Chef Noe Alcala will also manage and oversee the kitchen for Slice. Along with Sous Chef Jesus Guzman and the manager Susan Perkins, Hussong's continues to delight everyone who drops in.
HUSSONG'S is open daily from 11 to 11. With a family-run theme, great service, and a wide selection of Mexican favorites, I had a hard time picking what to try. The Plazero Grilled Corn, lightly brushed with mayo-butter and a sprinkle of cotija cheese and chile flakes, was the opener. Trying to decide between the Ceviche Baja Style, fresh shrimp marinated in lime and jalapeno, or the Queso Fundido, which is baked cheese on corn tortillas, or the standards such as Nachos, or the Guacamole, caused me to almost flip a coin. The Pozole Soup, totally different from the standard Tortilla soup, is filled with seasoned pulled pork, hominy onion and cilantro. They have Skirt Steak Chile Relleno, the regulars such as Flautas, Fajitas and Carne Asada, and of course burritos and chimichangas.
If you don't know the Legend of Hussong's Cantina, or haven't visited, you are missing a taste of history. Ensenada, located about 50 miles south of San Diego, was established back in 1892, and was the birthplace of the first Margarita in 1941. The legend goes that John Hussong, came from Germany and with the discovery of gold south of the border came to stay. The population was a bare 1337 residents, with 3 hotels, a bar, a stage coach stop, a flour mill and a wine cellar. Hanging out at Meiggs Bar, the only drinking establishment at the time, John was asked to watch over the place while Meiggs went in search of his wife who had fled to California. Neither Meiggs or his wife returned so after 2 years, John purchased the place. One year later, John purchased the building across the street, which was originally a Southern Lane stage coach stop. Hundreds of famous people have sat on the stools over the years, and tested out the tequila's and Mexican beers. Hussong's is sometimes referred to as the “The Bar That Built A Town.” Living in San Diego for 20 years, I made it a stop every time I was over the border.
Hussong's has live rock'n'roll on Thursday nights from 6-10 p.m, and Friday & Saturdays from 7-11. Happy hour featuring Jose Cuervo drinks are Sunday -Thursday from 4 to 6 p.m. There are $4 grilled corn plazeros, $5 Tecates & a taco, $6 happy hour nachos, and buy one get one traditional margaritas. For locals there are 50 cent tacos and $2 beer on weeknights after 6 p.m.

KING & I
Want real, and I mean real, Thai food? With all the flavor, atmosphere and perfect service you would get right in Thailand? Well, it's here, at the KING & I on Tropicana. From the moment you walk in the door, you are greeted with the hospitality of the Thai People. Kris Bujadham and his wife have owned the King & I since 1993. The restaurant has walls and booths that are built from giant stones, with timbers lining the ceilings, and Thai wall hangings above each booth. Formerly Kung Fu West, this great little jewel is the perfect place to test all your senses with the extreme differences in the many dishes they prepare.
We started with Singha beer and Chicken Satay, marinated in coconut milk and curry sauce with peanut butter sauce and cucumber salad. Three different pepper sauces came out, of which we sampled all. Quickly following was a pot of their Galangal Chicken Soup, kept warm in a flaming pot. Usually called “coconut soup”, this has always been a favorite of mine. The Spicy Mint chicken was a new dish for me, combining exotic flavors of mint and rosemary. Another of their most ordered dishes is their Pad Thai, again famous for the peanut sauce taste. They have an extensive menu, quick service, and if you are a single, don't hesitate to drop in, you will feel quite at home. Regulars seem to show up weekly. Only 100% liquid vegetable oil is used and no MSG. Open 7 days a week, Mon -Sat. 11 a.m.-to 9:30 p.m. and Sunday 1 p.m. -9 p.m. Call 702-739-8819. 1107 E. Tropicana. Delivery service available. RAILROAD PASS GINGERBREAD HOUSE
It’s Holiday time at the Historic Railroad Pass Hotel & Casino. And, as part of the year- long 80th birthday celebration, they are bringing back a tradition from the 1800’s with the artistry of Gingerbread Houses.
The history of Gingerbread is an interesting story. It first became known as a European staple in 992, when a Monk from Pompeii moved to France, and began teaching Priests and Christians the art of making Gingerbread. By the 17th century, it was popular all over Europe. In 1773 the city of Drayton in Shropshire, England, became famous for its Gingerbread creations, which were displayed and sold throughout England. In 1812, the Brothers Grimm published the book, “Hansel & Gretel,” which had a famous house, made of Gingerbread and decorated with various stones and sugar windows. America picked up on the Christmas tradition during the early 1800s, and trumpeted the making of Gingerbread Houses for the Christmas season.
“We wanted to display the artistic talents of our locals in Southern Nevada, while making the holiday display available free, 24 hours a day, to the public in our hotel lobby here at the Railroad Pass,” Curt Thompson, Director of Operations, said. “We anticipate the Holiday display will be available thru Christmas Day.”
Thompson pointed out that while admiring each creation, please appreciate the time and dedication each baker put into creating their display. Thompson recalled that many years ago, Las Vegas Strip hotel chefs held Gingerbread House contests for all to enjoy during the holidays. He plans to make the display an annual tradition at the Railroad Pass.

ABSINTHE is back in the permanent tent at Caesars. With a couple of new acts, this adult only, Cirque styled show is something you will not want to miss. Right in front of Caesars, by Serendipity.
Wacky? Crazy? Insane? Fantastic? Yes, all of these and more!
Absinthe, the new summer show in the Spiegeltent, a European regular known for its mirrors, stained glass, velvet and wood, is playing in front of Caesar's Palace and next to the restaurant Serendipity.
A little show, with a huge amount of comedy, mystery, Cirque style death defying acts, are all rolled into one. The 600 seat theater gives you a roaring good time. If you are offended by words like f***, you might need to pass on this one, but you'll be missing a rollicking good time.
Absinthe has a woman wearing pasties who crawls into a supersized balloon, a trio of tight-rope walkers and numerous other artists who are literally 2 ft from the front row. The stage is a mere 9 ft wide, so everyone is so up close it's frightening.
The show is for 18 and up, and includes burlesque performers. This is the place to laugh, let your hair down, and plan on having a night where the Unexpected becomes the Expected.
The ringmaster “The Gazillionaire” is a slick haired operator, who is loud, off the edge, and totally unlike any other leader of the pack, who is aided by Penny, a very quirky girl, maybe missing a few screws as the old saying goes. Together they piece together this hilarious comedy.
The show premiered on April 1 and will run thru September 18th. It has been hailed as the hottest new ticket in town and everyone is clamoring to see it. If you are a local, you can get a “special” price by going onto any showticket website and using the code “Local”.
ABSINTHE performs Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 8 and 10 and Wednesday and Sunday at 8 p.m. only. Prices start at $69. with tax, with a VIP package available at $99 & tax per person. Please call 702-785-5394/866-633-1095 or visit www.AbsintheVegas.com. Follow ABSINTHE on Facebook and Twitter@AbsintheVegas.

CANALETTO RISTORANTE ON THE GRAND CANAL
This beautiful restaurant, sitting in St. Marks Square on the Grand Canal at the Venetian, is certainly a place to have a romantic dinner. The indoor dining area has 16-foot-ceilings, with polished hardwood floors, where you can see the open kitchen. The outdoor dining in the square let's you watch the mime's and magicians perform during dinner. We dined on a busy Friday night, as the assistant General Manager, Matthew Galli, attended quickly to our table. We started with a pinot noir, MacMurray Ranch, and a glass of sparkling “Carpen Mavoliti” wine. Our antipasto coarses were fresh sardines, soaked in vinegar, oil, pepper and chili, with sweet onions on crostini, along with imported salt cod, marinated in milk overnight, then sauteed in a pizza oven, and served on a soft polenta. My main course consisted of a risotto with baby tomatoes, arugula, onions, garlic, Grana Padana and fresh mozzarella, and my guest dined on a a fillet, filetto di bue al arrostito, with rosemary and garlic sauce, served with sauteed organic spinach and tomatoes. It was hard to not have one of the great looking pizzas, or to try the rack of lamb. From Free range chicken to Chinook salmon, there is a wide range of flavors for everyone. The deserts consisted of a caramel pear, and a crepe marinated with grappa, and a marvelous tiramasu. Our service was gracious, and our waiter spoke French and Italian. We couldn't have asked for a more spectacular evening with this setting.
Upstairs, there are five private rooms for groups from 6 to 175, all with views over the grand Canal and the gondolas passing below you. Canaletto's is part of the IL Fornaio restaurant chain, which has a great reputation. There is another Canaletto's located in Newport Beach as well.

DON B'S STEAKHOUSE- A Piece of Downtown History
You hear of mouth watering steak houses, great atmosphere, and waiters who know all the history of the area? Where can you find that today? Well, locals and visitors alike are in for a fantastic treat.
Right downtown on Fremont Street, on the 2nd floor of Fitzgerald's Casino is one of the best steak houses around, Don B's. I dined in this great restaurant and can't wait to return. The moment I was seated by Margarita, our hostess, I knew this was going to be special. Our waitress, Lessie has been working there for 23 years. Another server, Sandy has been there 32, and the chef, Jose Garcia a mere 27. In this day and age, I call that job security. And to be there that long, means you have to love your job and the environment, and they pulled out all the stops to show it. We started with a Sterling Caberet 2009 from Calistoga. The warm basket of bread featured pieces of crusty, white chocolate infused delicacies. Trust me, I have tasted this before and it is fantastic. For starters we tried Maryland Style Crab Cakes, giant Tempura Shrimp, and a Grilled Portabella Mushroom topped with shrimp and smoked mozzarella cheese. Any of them could have been the main dish, they were perfectly cooked. I had the French Onion Soup and my companion had the best Clam Chowder I had tasted in ages. The menu is known for it's steaks, so steaks it was. A beautiful filet, perfectly broiled, wrapped in bacon, huge baked potato, broccolini, fresh tomato, and lemon wedge. We could have picked from Apricot Chicken, Grilled Chicken medallions with Linguini and Fresh Rosemary to Steak Dianne. A wide range of selections. The desert tray consisted of carrot cake, white chocolate covered lemon cake, chocolate and raspberry cake, crème brulee, flourless chocolate cake and pecan caramel tart that was to die for. The presentation is perfect, in everything that came out quickly from the kitchen. Don B's have added a light menu from 9-10:30 pm. with dishes such as Broiled Salmon, Fitz Salad, Skirt Steak ,and Chicken Asiago all for under $16.00. The restaurant seats 85, and is perfect for intimate parties. As we dined a group of 20 were that come to Vegas once a year, were back again, and promised they would return every single year. I got some old time history of Las Vegas. The hotel was originally called the Sundance, and I remember bringing in junkets there 35 years ago. The original restaurant Cassidy's, was where the showroom is today. In 1989 it was renamed Fitzgeralds, and in 2001 it was bought by the late Don Barden who owned Majestic Star Casinos across the country. Mr. James Karnuth heads up the restaurant along with the Director of Facilities & Entertainment for Fitzgeralds, Mr. Gene Sagas, who soon may announce a couple of new shows to add to the line up of the #1 Dinner Show, Marriage Can Be Murder, and Kevin Burke's Fitz of Laughter play.

Dinner du Titanic-History Recreated.
The beautiful Bernard's Bistro in The Village at Lake Las Vegas has become the setting for a dinner recreated from the RMS Titanic. Every Thursday night the luxurious menu is straight from the opulent tables of the beautiful ship. The Dinner du Titanic menu includes two classes of service, prepared by Chef Bernard Tordjman, a native of Versailles, France, who is the owner and chef of this bistro. Normally serving French cuisine, Bernard decided to try an experiment, and he artfully succeeded. Roger his head waiter, greeted us at the door with bubbling champagne, escorted us to the table and proceeded to give us absolute impeccable service for this truly unique night. The waiters are dressed with uniforms, featuring logos from the Titanic, menus are duplicated for their looks. With the movie Titanic playing we sat down down for a royal evening. For the First Class menu, I tried the Chilled Tomato Soup Gazpacho Madelina with sour cream, while my companion had Consomme Olga, with a touch of Russian flavor. The Second courses were Canapes a l'Amiral, sauteed shrimp Titanic in Herb Butter Sauce with Oyster’s a la Russe for myself, while my friend dined on Romaine Heart with Roquefort Cheese and Caramelized Grilled Pear. The Third course was Titanic Champagne Sorbet;with a multitude of berries. For the main course, a few of the selections were Poached Salmon with Mousseline Caviar Sauce, Broiled Chateaubriand of Beef Tenderloin with Bearnaise Sauce, or Lamb Loin and Rack of Lamb with Mint Sauce. Rounding out the final course, were Inspired Desserts, Assorted Pastries or Assorted Cheeses. The crème Brulee was incredible. The menu was fit for a king, queen or a First Class guest on the Titanic, and we were treated as such. It was truly a fabulous evening, with so much history recreated.
The regular menu features Crepes, Baked Seafood, Bistro Sandwiches, salads, and numerous meats served fresh from the grill.
The bistro is friend with burgundy and dark woods. There is a piano bar, where a novice pianist can play and at 7 pm. live entertainment starts. The outdoor terrace seating of 52 persons, has a lovely atmosphere. You overlook the lake. The menu and theme were so successful that we hope that Chef Bernard will continue to recreate this every Thursday, and to continue to cook with the elegance and enthusiasm that we saw on this special night. His presentations of food are of the highest quality. Be sure to come out often, enjoy the view, the food, and the exquisite flavors that Chef Bernard creates.
Friday nights are movie nights.
Reservations for lunch and dinner are 702-565-1155. The Village, at Lake Las Vegas, info@bernardsbistro.com. Open Monday- Thursday 11-9, Friday-Sunday 10-10. Seatings for 92.

Famous Chef Carla Pellegrino has taken over this Trattoria and brought her expertise with her. Born in Brazil, raised in Italy, she adds flair and sophistication to the Tropicana. GETTING DIRTY IN VEGAS- FOR THE BIG BOYS!
The biggest new playground in Las Vegas has just opened, and what a one of a kind experience it is! DIG THIS, the nation’s first recreational heavy equipment playground opened on May 10th off the freeway by Palace Station. I went over to check out the “digs” and got to play construction boss on a Caterpillar 315CL hydraulic excavator. Getting a safety lesson, donning a hard hat and a reflective vest, I climbed in the air conditioned cab with a little reservation. Could I do this? I settled down into the comfortable seat, put on the radio controlled headphones so I could get my instructions, and turned on the super quiet engine. Would my nerves settle down? Would the machine turn over? Could I operate the controls? I’m a woman! But when I got orders to first move the joy sticks, to move the giant arm into the air, to open up the bucket, and the instruction to turn the cab all 360 degrees around, and they all went off without a hitch, I was hooked.
You can choose between the Excavator and a Caterpillar bulldozer to dig, scrape, build, or generally move earth around a 5 acre lot. You can rumple around the world’s largest sandbox. You can even learn to pick up small items such as basketballs within an hour.
Ed Mumm first brought this concept in Dec. 2007 to Steamboat Springs, Colorado. After testing and refining the experience for 4 years, he started to look for a spot in Las Vegas. Situated at 3012 S. Rancho Drive, on the vacant Scandia Amusement Park site, he found his perfect place. Seen from the freeway, this is not something under construction, this is the playground itself. Open from 8-5 daily, the “Big Dig” books guests at the rate of only 2 an hour for personalized service. Beginning soon will be team building programs. “Mega Days,” available for private and special events. Reservations can be made at www.digthisvegas.com , 1.888.344.8447 or facebook at www.facebook.com/digthisfun, or on twitter. Don’t pass up this experience. Anyone can do it. I did!
THE CONDUCTOR'S ROOM AT RAILROAD PASS
“The Best Kept Secret” in the county
What an amazing job Railroad Pass has done keeping this quiet among their close knit clientele. Well, we are going to open up this news to all of Las Vegas. No one will want to miss an evening here, hosted by Maitre D’Extraordinaire Sean Grady. Now many of you may remember him from years past at “Top Of The Mint” and other numerous restaurants throughout the city, including The Congo Room and Don the Beachcomber, Sahara Lake Tahoe, and lastly from the the Bootlegger.
Another highly prized tidbit is they are owned by MGM, and they only do the top shelf in restaurants. On August 1, Railroad Pass Casino became the oldest licensed casino in the state.
Kurt Thompson is General Manager over the whole property including the 100 rooms the 50 seat showroom and the 110 seat restaurant.
The Conductor’s Room features dark red walls, and huge booths, you can sink into a world away from the frantic pace of Las Vegas. Halfway to Boulder Dam, it is quick trip and a great evening out. Starting with a bottle of Rosenblum Cabernet from Napa, and an order of the Fried Calamari, I knew I was in for one relaxing evening. Looking over the rest of the appetizer menu, with King Crab Cocktails, Portabella Mushrooms or Oysters on the Half shell or Fried Calamari I gave up and let Sean order for us. Try the Conductors Salad, or the Baked French Onion Soup if you can’t make up your mind. Sean picked out the Steak and Australian Lobster combination, with asparagus, and a baked potato big enough for three. My friend has the Blackened Sea Bass, pan seared in pure butter and Cajun spices. They also feature Barbeque Baby Back Ribs and Chicken, Veal or Chicken Parmesan and Grilled Herb Chicken Breasts. And then the big surprise when the dessert cart was rolled out. This is truly a “WOW’ factor. Every freshly made dessert is at least a fourth of a whole cake. The Carrot Cake must have been 6 layers high; theTiramisu was enough for a whole family. Every dessert was incredible. The service is impeccable; the employees are at your constant beck and call. Open Thursday thru Sunday, from 4-10, call 702-294-5000 for reservations. Located at 2800 S. Boulder Hwy. Henderson, Nv. 89105

BITE'S' 5 years
at the Stratosphere Hotel & Casino
Opening on Friday the 13th, August 2004, BITE has had over 1,500 performances and nearly a half-million audience members since it first started. This strange combination of sexy and erotic topless dancers, rock 'n roll songs, acrobatics, and vampires has proven a success where others can only hope to imagine.
“There are so many factors that have contributed to making BITE a success,” said Tim Molyneux, producer and writer of the show. “The world has always had a fascination with vampires – they’ve been a part of popular culture for hundreds of years and we are once again experiencing a real resurgence in television, film and print. Some people come to see BITE simply because it’s a vampire show, but ultimately they are always blown away by the production. Vampires allow us to do the things that provide the ingredients for a great Vegas show: fun music, high-energy, acrobatics in the air and on the stage, magic, martial arts, gymnastics, contortion, comedy, drama, great dancing, live singing and sexy girls. The show tells a compelling story through the lyrics of the songs and the classic vampire lore of lost love. There’s a purpose behind everything happening and it all comes together in an experience the audience loves and won’t find anywhere else in the world,” he added.
“BITE has been, and continues to be, a great asset for the Stratosphere,” said Stuart Richey, vice president of marketing for Stratosphere. “This show gives people something truly unique and at an incredible value for their entertainment dollar."
The Lord Vampire searches for the perfect female, which he hopes to make his Queen of the Night. Music is all the songs of the ‘70s, ‘80s and ‘90s.
Tickets for BITE are just $49.45. The show starts at 9 p.m. Friday through Wednesday. For tickets or information, call (702) 380-7711 or (800) 99-TOWER.
The Stratosphere Hotel & Casino is located at 2000 Las Vegas Boulevard South

LUCIO’S – Enough to tempt everyone!
LUCIO’S has opened their second location in Las Vegas in the old home of Ferraro’s at 5800 W. Flamingo. Their first restaurant at 8615 W. Sahara at Durango has been a huge hit with locals. The new location is bringing everyone back to try the fabulous menu.
Lucio Picozzi, along with Chefs Giovani Tufaro and Carlo Carrizo have created mouth watering dishes to absolute satisfy everyone.
We started off with a fabulous appetizer plate of bruschetta, salamis, cheese, artichokes, and carpaccio, with a beautiful bottle of Borgo Magedo’s Prosecco.
LUCIO’S is known for their incredible risottos, of which I was happy to partake and savor. From one risotto with shrimps and asparagus in light tomato sauce, to lobster meat and truffle risotto, to the sausage and spinach which I loved, anyone of which is incredible. They will please any palate. I also sampled the hand rolled gnocchi Quattro Fomaggi, which is a potato dumpling with gorgonzola, fontina, mascarpone, and parmesan cream sauce. LUCIO’S features one of the finest veal chops in town toped with arugula and truffle oil. The Cioppino di Manzo came out to the table next to us, with scallops, shrimps, mussels, clams, calamari and white fish and the smell permeated the whole area.
As we settled into the next course, of sole, with a wonderful white sauce, I wondered how much more we could eat. I didn’t wonder long, as out came homemade Tiramisu, and cannolis.
Lucio was born in Rome. He worked for 15 year at the chain of Il Fornaio’s all over the country before settling into Las Vegas. Gracious as a host, superb as a cook, and a wonderful manager Lucio welcomed us to his little world of Italian heaven.
The restaurant has two private dining rooms, one holding up to 40 people and a semi- private room holding up to 60. Most all of the waiters and staff are from Italy. There is live entertainment Wed-Sat. with The Goodfellows performing and happy hour every day from 4:30-7. Open M-F 11:30 to 2:30 for lunch, and 4:30 to 10:30 for dinner. Call 702-20-1008 for reservations, or visit www.lucioristorante.com. You will be glad you did.
THE MOB EXPERIENCE!
Opened to a huge crowd where a invite only party of 1500 people were wined and dined throughout the evening. It featured an open bar, food fit for a king, and a terrific band, the individual family members who helped with this fantastic new addition to Las Vegas partied for hours. Pamela Anderson, Carrot Top, and Holly Madison were a few of the celebrities that stepped out to see this interactive exhibit. With James Caan, Mickey Rourke and Frank Vincent from the Sopranos TV show, doing “guest” appearances in the form of holograms, you move thru the decades of made family members. The Experience has been two years and then some in the making. With members signed from the Spiloto, Lansky, Siegel and Giancana families, this has been a huge undertaking. Jay Bloom and Murder Incorporated have worked long and hard to purchase artifacts, and reproductions to give you a history of the notorious families who helped build Las Vegas and shape the nation. Don’t miss this great new attraction. Daily at the Tropicana, 10-10, $39.95.
I LOVE BURGERS, at the Palazzo, has opened on the 2nd floor shopping area. Known for their fries and terrific burgers, give this place a chance next time you are shopping.
LA CAVE-WYNN’S NEWEST
Michael Morton’s new La Cave is definitely what its name says. Looking like a cave carved out of a mountain, this unique new restaurant in the WYNN serves up some of the finest “small plates” of food in this town. With a small bar as you enter, a wine rack with flashing LED lights and a beautiful outdoor garden seating area, to its curved entryways and numerous 6 ft high candles, you get a warm and European feeling. The walls are covered with fabric; the arches and circles throughout bring you to the heart of France. The seating of only 120 in this 4000 square ft. establishment is intimate and the service couldn’t be any better. Every waiter comes by to see if the meal is to your liking and to tell you a little about the numerous cheeses, from St. Andre, Landana Aged Gouda, to the Bermuda Triangle.
Executive Chef William DeMarco has prepared a spectacular menu to pick from. Start with a Fiery Artichoke, Roasted Pepper and Olive, or a Canadian Bacon, Poached Quail Egg, and Fontina flatbread. Maybe try the Gorgonzola Salad, or the Shaved Asparagus with Hard Boiled Eggs, and Pancetta. Move on to the grill entrees, where there is Angus Mini Burgers, Beef Filet with Crostini and Blue Cheese and Baked Clams with Pepperoncini and Chorizo.
Their wine list includes about 250 bottles and about 30 wines by the glass. We started a wonderful night with a 2007 CC Cabernet from Napa, a full bodied bright red, and tried a Castello di Fornatella from Tuscany with wild berries. Bacon wrapped dates with Blue cheese and the Hamachi plate with pickled chilies and candied lemon zest, was a new taste sensation. The Stuffed Chicken and Roasted Salmon plates were filled with amazing new flavors. The Diver Sea Scallops with Polenta Cake, and Shrimp Sauce were delicate and plump. We finished the meal off with Beignets with Strawberry Jam and Crème Anglaise. Why not linger another moment for an expresso and listed to a DJ in the lounge if you dine on Friday or Saturday evenings.
Located down the hall among the shops, you might have to ask the way. But it is well worth the time to find this jewel. Open Sunday thru Thursday, 11-11 and Friday and Saturday 11-2. Dressy please. For reservations, calls 702-770-7375. www.wynnlasvegas.com . And another great restaurant at Wynn is the newly opened Lakeside Grill on the beautiful Lake of Dreams.
PJ CLARKE’S OLD ESTABLISHMENT-NEW LOCATION
The world famous PJ Clarke’s, right out of New York has taken over an esteemed spot in the Forum Shops. Located on the first floor, they opened in December and have quickly become a hot spot for the celebrities. Known for over 125 years in New York, and with locations in Washington D.C. and Sao Paulo, Brazil this world famous pub and burger joint has seen countless “who’s who” over the years. Owner Phil Scott is proud to be here and makes sure his waiters mix a perfect cocktail and remember your name.
The restaurant is fitted with a $250,000 custom-made 38- foot- long all mahogany bar which was imported from France, and a separate 18-foot –long bar for raw lobster, oysters and clams, making you want to linger for hours. With high backed booths, red checkered table cloths, and old fashioned streetlights, this 12,000 sq. ft. restaurant seats 323 people in the main dining room and 25 at the bar. The famous “sidecar” room holds 65, which is perfect to book for a private function.
Every wall is covered with black and white pictures of the famous people who have negotiated a contract, signed a deal, had a drink or eaten one of the famous burgers over the years. Pictures of Ali, Elvis and Priscilla, and Jimmy Durante hold privileged wall space.
Starting with hot pretzel bread at every table, the menu ranges from huge plates of raw seafood, to the most fantastic French Onion soup. We had the Crisp Monterey Calamari, different from any Calamari I have ever tried, with Hot Peppers and a creamy dip. Crispy Duck with Sweet Potatoes seemed to be a big hit. The burgers were huge, as I watched them being delivered to table after table. Seafood entrees include Skillet Rainbow Red Trout, and a favorite for everyone, Fish & Chips. Baked Macaroni & Cheese, Braised Short Ribs, and of course the ever famous steaks, fixed in a variety of manners. Try a Bubble & Squeak, or Shaved Brussels sprouts with Smoked Bacon. Let the wine experts pair your meal with one of their fine wines, maybe the Row 11 Pinot Noir 2008. Dine inside, or take a table and watch the passersby’s. Open from 11 a.m. to midnight. Biscayne Steak House
The Tropicana has done it again! With all the beautiful renovations throughout the whole property, the Tropicana has also opened one extraordinary new restaurant. Biscayne, located on the 2nd floor, is a premium steakhouse. Going along with the new theme of casual elegance at the Tropicana, it has an island flair, bringing in all kinds of new taste experiences with its seafood and wine. Light and tropical is definitely the atmosphere and feel in this airy restaurant. Set the mood for a fun-filled evening. Why not start out with a Cheese Fondue, along with Chimichurri Hummus for dipping. With Kobe Beef Sliders, Griddled Crab Cakes, Lamb Eggplant Tacos, or Conch fritters for starters, you will enjoy the pairings that can be had with some of the signature cocktails. A Canepagne, made with Cruzan single barrel, champagne, and bitters or a Dr. Sylvius Martini made with Absolute vodka, Cointreau, lychee, and fresh lemon. Let the wine steward fix you a Daiquiri Floridita, with 10 cane run. Or try any of the wines in the 200 bottle list from around the world. Chef George Bargisen wants you to try a main course of Banana Leaf Wrapped Mahi Mahi, with tropical succotash, or the XXL Kobe Burger. Maybe the Oven Roasted Halibut with Passion fruit coquito or the Wild Atlantic Salmon with chipotle pineapple yogurt sauce. Huge portions, great taste, and superb service. All the regulars, with linguini, rigatoni and zita on the menu, you can also opt for Sea Bass with artichoke hearts, tomatoes, fennel, roasted potatoes and crispy prosciutto and a lemon butter sauce.
